10 Scriptures to Bring Light to the Darkness
As believers, it’s easy to be overwhelmed when we look at the world. From popular music and culture to the dark and macabre practices associated with Halloween, sometimes you just want to jump back in bed and pull the covers over your head. But the Bible tells us repeatedly: DO NOT FEAR!
God is in control, Jesus has already won the victory, and we are called to pray, love others, and shine as light in the darkness.
How Do You Shine as Light in the Darkness?
One thing is certain: we should have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness. We shouldn’t condone, participate, or passively allow things that are clearly in conflict with God’s Word and will.
And remember, we’re called to love people — to pray for salvation, restoration, and transformation. Matthew 18:14 reminds us, “In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.” God’s will is for all to come to a saving knowledge of Christ.
It can be challenging to know how to navigate certain cultural norms to love and reach people without compromising our values. We may not always get things 100% right, but continue to pray and let the Holy Spirit lead you—also be open to conviction and changing course if needed.
Steps to consider:
First, we have a responsibility to maintain our integrity and the cleanness of our hands. Sometimes we have to say no or completely avoid situations that are clearly dark, sinful, or in conflict with the Word of God.
Second, avoid the slippery slope; stand on stable ground. Compromising makes things complicated down the road. Keep things simple, and avoid confusion.
Third, establish your environment and invite people into it. Whether it’s game night or an outdoor activity, create a space that is FUN and full of life.
Fourth, be led by love and grace. Remember that some people have never considered alternatives to what they’ve always known. Take time to get to know people.
10 Scriptures to Pray For Light in the Darkness
The enemy is not standing still, and we shouldn’t be either. Be proactive in speaking faith-filled words to others, creating an atmosphere of worship in your home, and shining your light. And very importantly: be diligent in prayer!
Pray with Authority
As we pray, we can stand with authority based on:
The Word of God - “Away from Me, Satan!” Jesus declared. “For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’ ” Matthew 4:10
The blood of Jesus - “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7
The power of the cross and resurrection - “And having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.” - Colossian 2:15
10 Scriptures to Pray
Additionally, here are ten scriptures to pray that remind us of our position of victory and our call to bring love and light to illuminate the darkness.
“You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.” - 1 John 4:4
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” - John 1:5
“And a servant of the Lord must not be quarrelsome, but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, and forbearing. He must gently reprove those who oppose him, in the hope that God may grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth. Then they will come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, who has taken them captive to his will.” - 2 Timothy 2:24-26
“But thanks be to God, who always leads us triumphantly as captives in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him.” - 2 Corinthians 2:14
“because everyone born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.” - 1 John 5:4
“I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world!" - John 16:33
“Have no fellowship with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them…Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is” - Ephesians 5:11, 15-17
“to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.” - Acts 26:18
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” - Colossians 3:12
“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!” - 1 Corinthians 15:57
