How do you fast according to God and the Bible?

The first step to successful biblical fasting is to honor God and humble ourselves. Although fasting has many personal benefits for us spiritually, physically, and mentally, we focus on seeking God first.

In scripture, we see God's people using fasting as a way to seek God's guidance, wisdom, and direction in their lives. Fasting is also a way to show our dependence on God and our desire to submit to His will.

Isaiah 58 is an entire chapter worth reading to understand how a righteous person is called to fast! In this chapter, God reveals that He is not interested in outward displays of fasting but desires the heart behind it.

So, instead of just abstaining from food and other earthly pleasures, we should focus on cultivating a heart of humility, repentance, and seeking God's will through prayer and meditation on His word.

What are some practical tips for successful fasting?

Regarding the specifics of how we should fast, the Bible does not give us strict rules or regulations. However, here are a few principles that can guide us in our fast:

  1. Fast for the right reasons: Our main motivation for fasting should be to seek God's will and grow closer to Him.

  2. Seek wisdom from God: Before starting a fast, it's important to pray and seek guidance from God on the duration and type of fast that is best for you.

  3. Set aside time for prayer and reading God’s Word: Fasting is not just about abstaining from food, but it's also about using that time to seek God and meditate on His word.

  4. Use the fast as a time for self-reflection: As we deny our physical desires, it can reveal areas of weakness or sin in our lives that need to be addressed. Be quick to listen and repent.

  5. Stay hydrated and listen to your body: Fasting can be physically taxing, so it's important to drink plenty of water and pay attention to your body's signals.

  6. Don't boast or show off your fast: Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:16-18 that our fasting should be done privately and not for others to see.

  7. End your fast gradually: After completing a fast, it's important to ease back into regular eating and not overindulge.

As we incorporate fasting into our spiritual practices, let us remember that it is not a way to earn righteousness or impress others. Instead, it is a humble and intentional act of seeking God's will and growing closer to Him. May we approach fasting with humility, sincerity, and submission to our Heavenly Father.

As you think about what type of fast today, we have several helpful resources on this site:

The Physical Aspect of Fasting

God created our bodies and called them good! Unfortunately, it's difficult to steward our bodies and eat a healthy diet in our modern culture. We're surrounded by processed foods and encouraged to indulge in excess.

Fasting can be a way to reset our physical habits and refocus on nourishing our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit.

Some potential physical benefits of fasting include improved digestion, increased energy, weight loss, and reduced inflammation. However, when we fast and pray as Christian disciplines, we aim to seek God first.

In the process, as our inner man is renewed, we can also trust God to take care of us physically, help us thrive on the daily bread of His Word, and experience life fully with health and well-being.

What Prayer to Do When Fasting?

As you experience God's presence and draw close to Him, let the Holy Spirit guide you in how to pray. But if you're unsure what to say, you can read the prayer prompt below to get you started.

Lord God...

As I prepare to fast, I seek Your guidance and strength. Help me clear my mind and open my heart to the spiritual growth that lies ahead. Give me the perseverance to withstand the physical challenges of fasting, and the wisdom to understand the lessons you have for me.

Help me remember that this fast is not only for my body's well-being but also for the nourishment of my soul. May my sacrifice serve as a testament to my faith in You and draw me closer to understanding Your divine love and grace.

Christ Jesus

The Word says in Hebrews 4:5 that "we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin."

I thank you for knowing my struggles and for being with me in every step of this fast. As I follow your example, walking with the fruit of self-control, please help me remember others and cultivate a spirit of compassion and humility.

Guide me in understanding your Word and teach me to follow the greatest commandments: to love the Lord with all my heart, soul, and mind and to love my neighbor as myself.

Holy Spirit

As the helper and guide promised by Jesus, I ask for Your presence throughout this time of fasting. I pray for your guidance and discernment during this fast. Open my eyes to see the areas of my life that need spiritual nourishment and growth. Show me how to align my thoughts and actions with Your will, and help me break free from any chains that may be holding me back from experiencing Your overflowing love and peace.

I also pray for a deeper understanding of the fruits of the Spirit - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Help me cultivate these qualities in my life as I seek to grow closer to You.
