Day 15 Devotional: Fasting For Discernment

Day 15: Fasting For Discernment

When I, Daniel, had seen the vision, I sought to understand it; and behold, standing before me was one who looked like a man. (Daniel 8:15)

As I’m writing this devotional, it’s January 2021. Over the year 2020, things have happened in politics, culture, and society that I never imagined I would see in my lifetime. Through this shaking, I have been startled out of my routine and become fully awake to the fact that we don’t have as much control over our lives as we might like to think.

I pray for discernment like never before. I want to understand what’s going on not just for my personal life, but to understand the larger scope of what God is doing on the earth.

God calls people to specific historical moments and seasons, and in this time we must be supernaturally gifted and empowered.

You are not in this time and place by accident. As challenging as it may be, God knows everything you are going through and He doesn’t intend for you to be a victim! He is calling you to be salt and light, to advance the kingdom of God, and to walk out your purpose.

In 1 Chronicles 12:32, the Bible talks about the sons of Issachar “who understood the times, with knowledge of what Israel should do”. This is my desire: to have supernatural insight into current events and trends and be equipped with knowledge of what to do next.

Daniel sought understanding of his visions and dreams. As you have read through Chapters seven and eight, you may have a number of questions about the symbolism of these events.

Although there isn’t enough room in this short devotional to explain, here are two commentary resources if you are interested in reading more historical context:

Wisdom, knowledge, faith, and distinguishing spirits are some of the gifts mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10. These gifts are given by the Holy Spirit, distributed as He wills, and for building up the body of Christ.

Daniel Chapter eight ends with Daniel exhausted and sick for days, but then he got up and took care of business even without full understanding of the vision he received. As we continue to walk by faith, it’s important that we ask for supernatural insight yet also remain steadfast, continuing to walk forward living our lives on mission with joy and boldness.

Your Journey

Where are your prayers centered? It’s time to ask for supernatural insight and revelation into our times so that we can pray, intercede, and build up the body of Christ in this season.
