Day 17 Devotional: Fasting For Breakthrough

Day 17: Fasting For Breakthrough

While I was still speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision previously, came to me in my extreme weariness about the time of the evening offering. And he instructed me and talked with me and said, “Daniel, I have come now to give you insight with understanding.” (Daniel 9:21-22)

Have you ever felt stuck? Maybe you were in a sour situation where a positive solution seemed impossible. Or maybe you’ve found yourself repeating patterns, bad habits that you desperately want to stop.

At other times, there might not be anything “wrong” per se, but life has gotten monotonous . . . you’re going through the motions yet craving a deeper experience with God and something more to life than just the normal routine.

If any of the above scenarios resonate (and if they don’t right now, they probably will someday), then you need a breakthrough. Whether it’s finding a solution, winning a battle, or busting through a plateau, ultimately God has the answer for your breakthrough.

When David defeated the Philistines he declared, “The Lord has broken through my enemies before me like the breakthrough of waters.” (2 Samuel 5:20) He named that place Baal-perazim, which means master of breakthrough.

Mark the places where the Lord has broken through! Take notes during times of intense prayer and fasting, and then record the praise and breakthrough moments.

Daniel interceded earnestly on behalf of his people in Chapter nine, repenting for their sins which held the consequences of literal bondage and exile. And as Daniel fervently prayed, he finally reached a breakthrough moment.

At the very end of the day, when he was completely exhausted, the angel Gabriel appeared to give him some instruction. He gave insight, understanding, and encouragement.

Insight with understanding means not just knowing what to do, but understanding what to do with the knowledge you have.

Daniel fasted as he cried out to God, and there’s no doubt that fasting amplified his prayers and sharpened his breakthrough, just as it can do for you.

Your Journey

Where do you need breakthrough right now? Read through Hebrews chapter eleven today and consider the faith of those who walked in obedience to God, even when they couldn’t always see the promise.
