Day 20 Devotional: Fasting For Fulfillment
Day 20: Fasting For Fulfillment
In the first year of Darius the Mede, I arose to be of assistance and a protection for him. (Daniel 11:1)
What are you truly hungry and thirsty for? Hopefully your time of fasting (however long it has been) has allowed you to refresh and refocus. Perhaps you’ve realized that the things you previously craved, habitually used, or thought were necessary for energy are not truly satisfying, and instead there’s a better way to fulfillment.
We can rely on the Lord for daily bread and living water not only when we’re fasting, but every day. Jesus told us, “The one who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water’.” (John 7:38)
The unique aspect of God’s provision is that it doesn’t just satisfy us individually, it overflows to saturate our environment. When we are abiding in Christ and filled with the Holy Spirit, the overflow impacts our sphere of influence for the kingdom of God; the joy, hope, and peace are too good to keep just for ourselves!
Remember the story of Jesus and the woman at the well. She initially thought they were talking about the water in that well, but Jesus had a much bigger purpose in mind.
Jesus replied to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” (John 4:10)
Aren’t you tired of that hunger and thirst that never seem to be satisfied?
This woman had previously had five husbands, and was now with a sixth man. She had a cycle that needed to be broken and some empty places to fill – and only Jesus can fill those places in us. The good news is she encountered Jesus and not only was she filled up, but she went out to tell her whole village about this man.
Daniel Chapter eleven paints a bleak picture of evil kings, political power plays, and destruction. Daniel couldn’t change the situation, just as we cannot always change the greater circumstances in our world, but consider what Daniel did: he arose to be of assistance and protection to others.
Where can you do the same?
Like Daniel, and the woman at the well, we can impact others from what we know and have been given. Remember this principle, “A generous person will be prosperous, and one who gives others plenty of water will himself be given plenty.” (Proverbs 11:25 )
Your Journey
Have you found the living water? If not, it’s as simple as coming to Jesus to receive His free gift. Who can you “water” and encourage today?
