Why do you think fasting is important?
Scripture calls us to do it. It helps us draw nearer to the Lord, which is everything.
What does your personal fasting practice look like?
We do a three week fast at the start of January with my church. I add parts each year after I pray for guidance and direction. Last year, I did full day fasts on Mondays and the rest of the days were fasting 8 pm to 12 pm the next day. During those times, I use a Bible reading plan and focus on being quiet with the Lord.
What is your biggest challenge when it comes to fasting?
The full day fast (24 hours) has been challenging. While I have done it 6 pm to 6 pm, I would love to truly learn to depend on the Lord even more and do it for 36 hours or longer next time.
Can you recall a time God gave you a breakthrough, revelation, or taught you something through fasting?
Yes!!!! The very first year that I did a fast was when God stirred my heart to start truly preparing my writing projects and work into a series. At the time, it was just an adult series and main book/memoir; however, it led to other places too with the children’s series. It is also when I started to record the promptings and the revelations so that I always have them as reminders and motivation. AKA: the best type of motivation!
What is your best advice for someone who is new to fasting?
Pray about it. I have done it teamed up with my husband and also with a colleague or two too. The first times of doing one it was helpful to have others doing it with me. God got this! Lean in!
Any additional info, tips, scriptures, or reflections you would like to share?
God is good! He loves when we lean into His faithful embrace. Fasting makes time for that and seeks to rely solely on Him. Beautiful things unfold when we do that.
