This month I’m so excited to share fasting insight from one of my dear friends who is also a co-founder of Catalyst Women. Catalyst Women is a discipleship movement for people to know Jesus + find freedom. You can view resources, blogs, and more on their website.

Why do you think fasting is important?

It’s a spiritual discipline that we are called to. Scripture says “when you fast” therefore it is a rhythm we’re meant to incorporate into our lives.

What does your personal fasting practice look like?

I fast the first 40 days of every year, social media + whatever else the Lord calls me to. I’m also participating in a monthly fast for my husband, 1 day each month (first time I’ve done that). Other fasts have been 30 days, 21 days- they’ve consisted of food from sunrise to sunset, media, music, chocolate, alcohol, and sugar.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to fasting?

Intentionally praying for “the thing” I’m fasting for.

Can you recall a time God gave you a breakthrough, revelation, or taught you something through fasting?

He revealed my husband to me through a fast, he broke me of disordered eating through a fast.

Posture of Fasting

What is your best advice for someone who is new to fasting?

It is not something done flippantly or carelessly. It is real, intense, incredible, and life changing. The posture must be open, receptive, humble. We must be intentional during the fast- God is at work, we should be, as well. (Not striving, but leaning into Him, coming into His presence.)

Any additional info, tips, scriptures, or reflections you would like to share?

There’s so much He will reveal to you what to fast and for how long. Image, diet, or weight should never be a factor when fasting. When He gives you the what and length, don’t let doubt, struggle, or difficulty make you change or shift mid fast. The enemy will do anything and everything to cause you to stumble. What the Lord calls you to, He will help you see it through. Trust Him. Lean into Him.
